Storyline:
An Israeli airstrike killed at least 90 Palestinians in a designated humanitarian zone in southern Gaza on Saturday, bringing the death toll in the besieged enclave since last October 7 to 38,443, a statement from the health authorities in the strip said Saturday.

The attack targeted al-Mawasi, where thousands of displaced Palestinians are sheltering, in the west of Khan Younis. About half of the dead were women and children, and another 300 or so Palestinians were wounded in the airstrike which the Israel said targeted Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif and senior Hamas commander Rafa Salama.

The Israeli military claimed in a statement that it acted based on "precise intelligence" to hit an area where the two senior Hamas leaders and additional fighters hid among civilians. However, Hamas called the Israeli claim false assertions. They emphasized that this is not the first time Israel has misrepresented the targets of its attacks, suggesting that such lies are intended to obscure the true scale of the assault.

Jordan and Egypt have condemned the Israeli airstrike in the al-Mawasi area. In a statement, Jordan's Foreign Ministry expressed outrage over the targeting of tents housing displaced individuals and called on the international community to take immediate action to ensure effective protection for the Palestinian people and local medical aid organizations. Similarly, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry strongly denounced the Israeli attack and demanded that Israel cease its assaults on civilians.

Also on Saturday, officials from Gaza's health authorities reported that Israeli forces attacked another displacement camp located in the west of Gaza City, resulting in at least 17 deaths.

At least 88,481 Palestinians had been wounded so far in the besieged territory from the unrelenting Israeli bombing and ground offensives since last October, according to the health authorities in Gaza.
