Discover China’s viral underground hotpot restaurant in air-raid shelter
An underground hotpot restaurant in an air-raid shelter has become a new viral attraction in southern China.
The video was filmed in China's mountain city of Chongqing on June 18.
“Underground City,” the largest subterranean hotpot restaurant nestled within a sprawling 520-metre-long air-raid shelter, features an impressive 208 tables spread across a staggering 4,500 square metres of space.
The venue can accommodate over a thousand patrons simultaneously, making it a true marvel of scale and innovation.
Since its grand opening in October 2023, "Underground City" has become the hottest dining destination, attracting more than 100,000 visitors eager to experience its unique setting.
During peak times, the restaurant sees a staggering daily turnover of more than 500 tables, underscoring its immense popularity and bustling atmosphere.
Given its unusual location, one might wonder if dining in an underground bunker could be an olfactory ordeal, with the rich aroma of hotpot potentially overwhelming guests. However, the reality is quite different. The secret lies in the sophisticated ventilation system installed throughout the bunker.
“Every 10 metres, you’ll find one of these tall, mysterious cabinets,” explained Zeng Wei, the manager of Underground City. “We dug down 1.5 metres, then installed all the essential systems for water, electricity, sewage, and ventilation before backfilling the area. These high cabinets are part of our ventilation system, which extracts air and circulates it out, ensuring that the air inside remains fresh and not overly stuffy or smoky.”
With a total area of 18,000 square metres, "Underground City" employs a natural ventilation system that keeps the temperature comfortably around 25 degrees Celsius, even during the summer months, eliminating the need for air conditioning.
