Berlin, Germany - August 22, 2024

The heartwarming video shows vets at a zoo in Germany successfully delivering two giant panda cubs and ensuring their safe arrival into the world.

Female panda Meng Meng, 11, became a mum for the second time following a gestation period of 149 days when the twins were delivered at Berlin Zoo's Panda Garden on 22nd August.

Giant pandas are born nearly hairless, deaf, blind, and with a pink hue, said the zoo, adding that their iconic black and white markings develop later.

The cubs' father, Jiao Qing, 14, plays no role in raising his offspring, a trait typical of male giant pandas both in captivity and in the wild, said the zoo.

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a bear species endemic to China.

It is listed as 'Endangered' on IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species with just under 2,000 individuals in their natural habitat.

Meng Meng made headlines on 31st August 2019, when she gave birth to Germany's first-ever panda cubs, Pit and Paule.

The two departed Zoo Berlin for their new home at Chengdu Panda Base in China in December 2023.
