An elderly giant panda became the first-time mum to the twin cubs in Hong Kong on August 18.

Video shows a newborn panda cub crawling around under its cosy blanket before curiously poking its head out and emitting delightful squeaks.

As the cub can still not independently regulate its body temperature, the blanket provides essential warmth and comfort.

The panda mother is the oldest giant panda on record to give birth for the first time.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government announced the birth of panda twins last week.

The pair, a female and a male, were cubs of Ying Ying and Le Le, pandas given as a gift by the central government to Hong Kong in 2007. In March, Ying Ying and Le Le naturally mated in Ocean Park.

After five months of gestation, female giant panda Ying Ying finally gave birth to the twins at 2:05 a.m. and 3:27 a.m. last Thursday.
