STORYLINE:

The world's first professional, multimodal large language model (LLM) for the field of lunar science has been released in China to significantly accelerate the processing speed of massive amounts of lunar data.

The new tool was debuted at the China International Big Data Industry Expo in Guiyang, the capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province, by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Geochemistry and the Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Group.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LIU JIANZHONG, Researcher at the Institute of Geochemistry
"Through our previous work, we have broken through a technical barrier, enabling our LLM to be applied to lunar and scientific research. I believe this is the greatest achievement of us. In assisting in lunar and planetary scientific research, in terms of certain surface structures and landforms of planets, the LLM can perform automated or intelligent recognition. It can solve some scientific problems that we have already discovered, but cannot be solved by humans yet. As the large model's intelligence level further increases through training, it can discover new scientific problems that we humans have not yet discovered, and it can solve these scientific problems relying on its own knowledge."

The Institute of Geochemistry has built a comprehensive "digital moon" platform with the world's most complete bank of data related to the exploration of the moon.

The LLM has created a "smart brain" for this digital moon.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): ZHEN ZHENYU, Vice President of the Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Group
"Over the past year, our primary focus has been on meteorite impact craters, which is the first pilot project of our collaboration. Initially, there was uncertainty about the effectiveness of our LLM in this field. However, it now appears that the accuracy of multimodal analysis for crater studies, including morphology and age analysis, has surpassed our expectations."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): OUYANG ZIYUAN, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
"In terms of data application, we must fully leverage the technological advantages of existing artificial intelligence technology. The LLM, built on Alibaba Cloud's unified model, will greatly accelerate the processing of massive amounts of data, helping researchers uncover new scientific discoveries and advancing the 'digital moon' platform toward greater intelligence."
