Renowned Graphic artist Kleiner Shames of Penwith Cornwall is seen creating Cornwall's largest Street mural As part of "The Be-Newquay Festival" 1st November to 1st December 2024. Newly created Iconic Street Art Murals are crafted onto the bland sides of commercial buildings in the seaside town.
Penwith artist Kleiner Shames and 45 RPM have designed two large-scale street art murals in the heart of Newquay. The first celebrates various aspects of Newquay’s heritage and identity, and involves creative input from the local community.
The Main artist is Kleiner Shames
Born in Oxford, England in 1988.
At the age of 14, he started writing graffiti, which began his intrigue with lettering, shapes and composition.
His practice has developed independently through constant exploration of places and techniques for creating artwork.
Kleiner progressed to working from studios in Oxford, Bristol, London and now Penzance.
Using a process driven and hand-made approach, Kleiner Shames creates enamel paintings, wooden assemblages, concrete sculptures, screen prints and large-scale outdoor works.
The festival has been designed with community at its heart, with local organisations taking centre stage to produce a diverse programme that reflects Newquay’s identity. With many of the events free or at an affordable price, from live shows, workshops and exhibitions to outdoor and well-being experiences. Reflecting the values that matter most to the local community, the Be Newquay Festival will invite everyone to discover something new and be creatively curious about the town.
Brought to you by Cornwall Council project ‘Experience Newquay’ in collaboration with its local project partners, the first wave of commissions are showcased by painted street murals here being created by Kleiner and the team from Slapdash studios based in Bristol.
Three street art murals are planned. Located in or near the town center, These large-scale artworks will depict various aspects of Newquay’s heritage and identity. People will be able to see them being painted and there will be street art workshops for people to have a go.
The month-long celebration of Newquay’s creative spirit, will take place from 1 November – 1 December 2024 funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and managed by Cornwall Council.
