Three new eastern black crested gibbons were born this year in Bangliang Gibbon National Nature Reserve in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

This brings the total number of the species in China to 39, according to the local nature reserve authority.

The eastern black crested gibbon is under first-class state protection in China.

In 2006, there were only 19 eastern black crested gibbons in China. The population has now grown to 39, indicating that conservation efforts have led to a positive trend for the species.
