SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LUO CHEN, Xinhua correspondent
"I am currently in Jerusalem. On the evening of Oct. 1, Jerusalem and many places across Israel were subjected to large-scale missile attacks by Iran. Air raid sirens continued to sound in Jerusalem and throughout Israel. In Jerusalem, we have seen a large number of missiles being intercepted, with fireballs appearing and several explosions being heard."
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said that the attacks were in retaliation for Israel's assassinations of resistance leaders, including Hamas Politburo Chief, Hezbollah Secretary-General, and a senior IRGC commander, as well as its intensification of "malicious acts" with the U.S. support in its offensives against Lebanese and Palestinian peoples.
On Tuesday, Israel's military vowed to "carry out attacks throughout the Middle East tonight" to retaliate against the Iranian attacks.
