STORYLINE:
Straw marquetry, a centuries-old craft, is making a comeback in the luxury industry.
This intricate art involves assembling strands of colored straw into geometric patterns, and is now used to adorn items such as tables, boxes, and furniture.
Manon Bouvier, 31, founded Atelier Paelis in 2016. The company is now renowned in the world of straw marquetry. It employs three people and produces pieces for high-end clients such as Louis Vuitton.
In 2019, Bouvier received the title of "Best Craftsman of France."
SOUNDBITE 1 (French): MANON BOUVIER, Straw marquetry craftswoman
"We analyze each piece of straw one by one and see what they look like, and then select them."
The raw material used in straw marquetry is rye straw, prized for its flexibility. It undergoes a precise process, from harvesting to drying, before being meticulously selected for marquetry work.
SOUNDBITE 2 (French): MANON BOUVIER, Straw marquetry craftswoman
"We come to chase the glue that is underneath and rub each time to heat the glue and fix the straw. This is the only step that we have to do that we repeat. That is why straw marquetry looks simple but in reality, this gesture is hard to acquire. It takes time to have the right strength and the right manipulation."
