In the early 1940s, the Derwent Valley Reservoirs, including Derwent Dam, became a crucial training ground for the Royal Air Force's (RAF) 617 Squadron, famously known as the Dambusters. Under the leadership of Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the squadron practiced low-level flying and precision bombing—an essential skill for their daring raid on German dams in 1943. The bouncing bombs used in the training exercises were designed by Sir Barnes Wallis, and the Derwent Dam played a pivotal role in preparing the pilots for their daring mission.
