STORYLINE:

At least four Palestinians were killed on Wednesday by gunfire from special units of the Israeli army in the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a press statement that the bodies of the four young men were taken to the government hospital in the city.

Nablus Governor Ghassan Daghlas condemned the killings, noting the four young men were victims of an assassination operation in the eastern market of the city.

"This is the real face of the occupation forces, who do not want calm and seek to spread bloodshed and murder in all of Palestine," Daghlas said.

Israeli special units infiltrated the city in civilian clothes, surrounded the vehicle of the four young men, and opened fire on them, which led to their immediate deaths, he added.

Meanwhile, the Fatah movement announced that the four deceased were members of its armed wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

Also on Wednesday, Israeli police said in a statement on the social media platform Telegram that the Israel Defense Forces killed five wanted militants in Nablus, including the head of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades' organization in Balata camp.

The statement accused these militants of getting involved in the planning of attacks against Israeli civilians and forces.

The incident took place amid a surge of violence between Israel and Palestinians over the past 12 months. Since the escalation on Oct. 7, 2023, more than 700 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli gunfire and shelling throughout the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
