STORYLINE:
An academic symposium centered on the heritage value, conservation and inheritance of Baiheliang in China's Chongqing and the Raoudha Nilometer in Egypt was held in Chongqing's Fuling District on Saturday.
Baiheliang, literally the "White Crane Ridge," is a 1,600-meter-long and 15-meter-wide stone ridge engraved with inscriptions about the Yangtze River dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It recorded the 72 low-flow years of the longest river in China from 763 to 1963 and is claimed to be the world's oldest hydrographic survey device.
Likewise, for thousands of years, Nilometers measured the water level of the Nile River during the annual flood season, and were used to predict the fortunes of the annual harvest and the prices of foodstuffs.
The Raoudha Nilometer in Cairo, constructed in 715 AD, stands as a prominent example of this technology.
Last year, Chongqing and Cairo initiated joint efforts to seek UNESCO World Cultural Heritage recognition for their respective sites.
Assem Hanafi, Ambassador of Egypt to China, praised the initiative as a major milestone for humanity and a bridge that strengthens the bond between the Chinese and Egyptian people.
SOUNDBITE (English): ASSEM HANAFI, Ambassador of Egypt to China
"It showcases the preservation and the importance that our ancestors attached to the river basin and its ecosystem has been very important. And for all these generations in China and Egypt, and for the world humanity as large, I think it's a very significant step.
So it's a bridge between people, it connects people together. Even though we are geographically distant, we are very far away, this legacy brings us together. And I'm quite confident that with the expertise and hard work, things will proceed successfully in the end."
