SOUNDBITE (German): OLAF SCHOLZ, German Chancellor
"Protectionism and trade wars are detrimental to us. As an export country, we value open trade with the whole world. And that's why we don't need the best tariffs, but the best cars and the most modern technology.
(Like in Japan and South Korea), good cars are also built in China. German companies do not have to fear this competition.
The vast majority of cars produced in China and imported to Germany come from German and international manufacturers.
This is sometimes forgotten in public discussions. And that's why I am saying, and I have already said publicly and repeatedly here, against tariffs that harm ourselves."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Frankfurt, Germany.
