10-year-old barrel racing prodigy rides her way to $1MILLION
Meet Dusky Lynn Hall - a 10-year-old barrel racing superstar from Huntsville, Texas, who has already earned $1million by beating riders twice her age.
Last month, Dusky Lynn walked away with over $123,000 in earnings and two championship titles at The Breeders Challenge Finale in Fort Worth, Texas, riding three different horses.
Barrel racing is a rodeo event during which a horse and rider attempt to run a pattern around barrels in the fastest time - and the prizes are huge.
And Dusky has been at it since aged three - and now rides fives or six horses every day, to master the nail-biting twists and turns needed to compete against the best adult riders in the world.
"When I saw London Gorham at The American, I knew I wanted to compete at the bigger shows," Dusky Lynn shares. "
"My goal for the last three years has been to win the million, and that's when I really started competing."
Dusky Lynn's path to success is paved with long days of practice, dedication, and a supportive family.
"We went on a summer run to Wyoming, Nebraska, and South Dakota," she said."
"Then we stayed with [barrel horse trainer] Amelia, who helped us with all my horses."
"We rode every day, did therapy on the horses, and just prepared."
Dusky Lynn balanced her passion with homeschooling.
"I get up at seven, ride for a few hours, do school from one to five, and then feed the horses before bed," she says."
Dusky is the third generation of barrel racers, and her mother, also Dusky, 45, is a trainer.
Dusky describes the importance of keeping the horses under good care for competitions.
"We do therapy on the horses, just like football athletes do therapy on their bodies," she explains. "We want to keep them feeling their best."
The imaginative names of the horses - including Aint Seen Famous Yet and KD Baby Driver to Jets Letters Ta Abby and TroublenvrLookSoGood - have become legendary in their own right.
"Dexter is my favorite horse," Dusky Lynn adds, noting Dexter's nickname is TroublenvrLookSoGood. "If we make a mistake, we fix it. It's the big things that make a difference."
In addition to her natural talent, Dusky Lynn's ability to stay calm during high-pressure events sets her apart from other competitors.
"I tell myself it's just another barrel race." she said."
"There's no reason to get nervous. That just makes the horses not perform well," she says. "There's always going to be another race tomorrow."
Dusky senior added:
"She doesn't just run against kids — she competes against women who have been to the National Finals Rodeo 16 times. "
"It takes very special horses to allow her to win at this level, and she's won on the biggest stages in the world."
Dusky Lynn's achievements have positioned her for even greater success.
"Her first goal was to win a million dollars, and she's done that at 10 years old," "
Dusky senior explains. "Now she wants to win another million at The American Rodeo, which would put her at $2 million in earnings."
"We met with an investment banker, and they said it's not often a 10-year-old has a million dollars in the bank," Dusky says. "We're investing it wisely so she'll never have to work a regular job if everything goes as planned."
Despite her extraordinary accomplishments, Dusky Lynn remains focused on her future. "I want to be at the NFR [National Finals Rodeo] in 10 years," she says. "Just chase your dreams and never give up. If someone knocks you down, don't believe them — they're just jealous."
