Large vibrant lanterns were displayed along a highway as an early preparation for Christmas in the Philippines.

Lyanna Kaye Gomez witnessed dozens of circular yellow and red parols in Angeles, Pampanga, on September 1.

Footage shows the displays attached to poles, all lined up together, illuminating the busy road.

The filmer said: 'I decided to take a video of the traditional parols since it's September 1st, the start of the Ber months.'

Glodamo said that the Christmas Star lantern has become an iconic symbol of Christmas in the Philippines. It reminds Filipino Christians of the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Wise Men in their search for Baby Jesus.

Pampanga is known as the Christmas Capital of the Philippines and is one of the best places to celebrate the season.

Spaniards brought Catholicism to the Philippines when they colonised the islands during the 16th century, ruling for over 300 years. Wars between the colonisers and the Filipinos resulted in more than 600,000 casualties.
