Asian water monitor lizards (Varanus salvator) are a common sight in canals and parks in Thailand. They are a protected species under Thai law, but that's about to change.
The minister of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Chalermchai Sri-on has said that he will issue a ministerial regulation to allow the commercial breeding of the reptile (BKK Post 6 November 2024).
The animals have attractive skins which could be used to make leather goods. They are a popular tourist attraction in Bangkok's parks, where they feed largely on carrion.
CITES lists them as of low concern.
