Customers have been flocking to "Britain's cheapest chippy" after they began selling meals - for just a PENNY."

The Island House, in Shard End, Birmingham, is offering the bargain deal for four days with several items on the menu being slashed to 1p.

Fish and chips, chicken and chips, kebab meat and chips as well as sausage and chips are all included in the "bonkers" opening promotion. "

Customers began queuing up from 11am yesterday (Wed) to get their hands on the cut-price meals which usually cost between £3.25-£6.95.

Other chip shops have offered similar deals previously but restricted to just fish and chips leading to The Island House being branded the "cheapest in Britain"."

And when the first 200 portions have been sold - the takeaway will still be selling the same menu items for just £1 or £1.50 for the rest of that day.

Hairdresser Michelle Growcott, 65, of Shard End, was first in line with her brother Mick, 64, and thought the offer was a joke at first.

She said: "I had seen it on Facebook but thought there must be some sort of catch. "

"I was taking a parcel back to the Post Office and I sent my brother Mick over to see if it was true. "

"I thought it was £1 which would have been cheap enough but I couldn't believe it when the man behind the counter said it was a penny. I thought he was joking."

"We both had fish and chips and it was really lovely - the fish was fresh and the chips were really crispy."

"I don't think fish and chips was even a penny when I was a young girl. "

"I'll definitely be back and give it 10/10."

Estate agent Jay Brennan, 22, of Shard End, was another happy customer and added: "Fish and chips for a penny is just bonkers."

"I had to get down here to try it. I thought the quality might suffer because of the price but it was the opposite and a really good standard. "

"I've seen these stunts pulled before but they never last longer than a day or until the first 50 are sold or something. "

"But this place it selling 200 portions daily for 1p - for four days. That's got to make them the cheapest chippy in the country surely."

The chip shop will be selling 50 portions of each meal at 1p and then £1 for the rest of the day. The same offer then resets the next day and runs until Saturday (9/11).

Theo Kyriacou, co-owner of The Island House, said: "We obviously lose money but it's about letting people know we're here and what we're all about. "

"Hopefully they like the food and come back. "

"We've seen places offer similar before on fish and chips - but we're doing it with fish, kebab meat, chicken and sausage and chips. "

"We're selling 50 portions of each at a penny so 200 in total and then it will be £1 for chicken and sausage or £1.50 for meat and fish. "

"Again, when chippy's have done this previously it's usually for one day - but we're doing this for four days straight. "

"I'm not sure if we're the first to do anything like this but we may well be the only ones idiotic enough to do so. "

"We're getting geared up and we're ready to welcome our new customers. "

"This is our tenth branch and we're looking at opening four more next year."

The Island House also has branches across Birmingham, the Black Country and Worcestershire.
