US: Thurston County Sheriff's Office Deploys High-Tech Takedown
Olympia, United States - November 06, 2024 In a high-speed chase on Delphi Road SW, about 8 miles southwest of Olympia, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office employed a cutting-edge pursuit-ending tool known as the Grappler. The incident, which unfolded on November 6th night, involved a suspect fleeing with dangerous speeds and reckless maneuvers. Dashcam footage released by the Sheriff's Office shows the dramatic moment when a deputy, with the aid of a backup officer, approached the suspect's vehicle. The suspect, swerving into oncoming traffic and reaching speeds of up to 100 MPH, was causing havoc on the road. As the chase progressed, the deputy observed the suspect's car emitting smoke, indicating potential engine failure. Seizing the moment, the deputy deployed the Grappler—a net-like device tethered to the patrol car. Once it ensnared the rear drive wheel of the suspect's car, it effectively forced the vehicle to stop by yanking the wheel. The suspect's car subsequently spun out, crashing into a fence, and the driver attempted to escape on foot. The video captures the deputy's warning to the suspect about the imminent threat of a K-9 unit, and true to his word, the K-9 assisted in apprehending the fleeing individual. The Thurston County Sheriff's Office highlighted the Grappler as a safer alternative to the traditional pit maneuver, eliminating the need for high-risk vehicle contact. The driver, found with a firearm and methamphetamine, now faces numerous charges, adding to the severity of his legal predicament in the Thurston County Jail.
