A driver crashed through a car park barrier before plunging through a shopping mall roof and killing a bystander.

The shopper was taking Christmas gifts home when he accelerated the vehicle through a concrete wall while in the wrong gear in Zone 11, Guatemala, on November 17.

CCTV shows how the vehicle plunged from the seventh floor. The car then crashed through the roof of the building below and landed next to a Christmas tree. Onlookers were seen videos from the scene trying to flip the car over to help the driver leave the wreckage.

The motorist was arrested at the scene on suspicion of reckless driving. A worker, 22, who worked at a kiosk in the shopping centre was later pronounced dead.

'I have nothing more to say to you, just to ask for forgiveness,' the young man reportedly said to local media reporters at the scene.

A judge transferred the case to a criminal court on duty when it was confirmed that a person had died as a result of the accident. The driver was remanded in custody while the investigation continues.
