STORYLINE:

Sudanese Defense Minister Yassin Ibrahim Yassin announced on Monday that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has advanced and recaptured key areas in central Sudan, as the fighting with paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is escalating in the capital Khartoum.

"Regarding the latest developments on the scene of the operations, today, this morning, Umm Al-Qura, east of Gezira, has been recaptured and the (RSF) pulled out of the sugar factory area, west of Sinnar. Al Sayyad mobile force (a force made up of the SAF, security forces and new recruits) is at the outskirts of Umm Ruwaba, while a force, which was coming to support the RSF fighters at Al Abbasiya axis was destroyed."

In the capital Khartoum, violent clashes broke out at dawn on Monday between the SAF and the RSF in the Shambat neighborhood in Bahri city, north of Khartoum, an eyewitness told Xinhua.

"Since 3:00 am (local time), we have been hearing the sounds of violent clashes, with columns of smoke rising from the center of Shambat area and the main bridge linking Khartoum, Bahri and Omdurman cities," the eyewitness said.

Bahri city has been witnessing fierce clashes between the SAF and the RSF over the past week, where the SAF announced during the past days that it had carried out qualitative operations and destroyed the RSF bases in the area.

The RSF has not yet commented on the clashes in central Sudan or Khartoum.

Sudan has been gripped by a devastating conflict between the SAF and the RSF since mid-April 2023.

The deadly conflict has resulted in more than 27,000 deaths and displaced over 14 million people, either inside or outside Sudan, according to estimates by international organizations.
