Philippines - December 03, 2024 A minor phreatomagmatic eruption at Taal Volcano’s Main Crater occurred at 5:58 AM on December 3, 2024, sending a dark plume 2,800 meters into the sky before drifting west-southwest. The four-minute event left traces of ashfall in Agoncillo and Laurel, Batangas, according to DOST-PHIVOLCS. The eruption resulted from water interacting with shallow magma, which has been emitting sustained sulfur dioxide levels for three years. Gas emissions averaged 7,216 tonnes per day on November 30, well above the monthly norm. Localized ground inflation has also been observed since September, though seismic activity remains low. While a major magmatic eruption is not expected, PHIVOLCS warns of potential sudden eruptions, gas emissions, and ashfall. Entry into the Permanent Danger Zone, especially near the Main Crater, remains strictly prohibited. Residents and local officials are urged to stay alert and follow safety protocols. Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, with close monitoring for any signs of escalating activity.
