Syria: Syrian rebels enter Damascus
Damascus, Syria - December 08, 2024 The latest video clip provided by a stringer for China Global Television Network (CGTN) on Sunday shows Syrian rebels entering the country's capital, Damascus. The video shows groups of armed individuals driving through the city in cars and pickup trucks and walking in the streets, as gunshots fired into the air could also be heard sporadically. The rebels announced on Sunday that they had 'freed Damascus' and overthrown President Bashar al-Assad. Meanwhile, the Syrian military stated that it is continuing operations against 'terrorist groups' in the towns of Hama and Homs, as well as in the Deraa countryside. In recent days, Damascus has become the focal point of rapid developments, marking a critical turning point in Syria's long-running civil conflict. The Syrian capital, which for years remained firmly under the control of President Bashar al-Assad's government, experienced a sudden and dramatic power shift on Sunday following significant rebel advances across the country. After opposition forces seized control of Damascus, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement on Sunday that al-Assad had left Syria and resigned as the country's leader, while calling for a peaceful transfer of power.
