Homs, Syria - Recent Numerous families displaced from Aleppo, a frontline of the conflict in northwest Syria since its escalation on Nov 27, have sought refuge in Homs, a city scarred by years of war and sanctions in central Syria, adding pressure to the local authority's already dwindling resources. Homs was a major battleground during the early years of the Syrian civil war, resulting in the displacement of countless people. It has now become a temporary "safe haven" for those displaced from northern Syria. At a school marred by years of conflict in the city, 45 families, including 40-year-old Maher and his family, who escaped Aleppo, have sought shelter. Muhammad, another displaced person, has also arrived at this school with his family. The 45-year-old man endured a treacherous journey from Aleppo to reach Homs, leaving behind his farm and livestock. Sadly, his disabled father was unable to escape Aleppo. Muhammad tries to contact his father every day, but communication in Aleppo remains completely cut off. Meanwhile, the resources in Homs have become scarce due to years of war and sanctions, making it difficult for the displaced to receive the support they need. In addition, Samer AbdelJaber, Director of Emergencies at the World Food Program (WFP), stated in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday that over 280,000 people have been displaced in northwest Syria since the escalation of the situation on Nov 27. He warned that if the situation continues to escalate, it is estimated that about 1.5 million people could be displaced. The WFP and its partners are working tirelessly to aid the affected population, AbdelJaber said. The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebel group and allied factions launched a major attack on Syrian military positions in western Aleppo on Nov 27. The attack was marked by intense exchanges of artillery and rocket fire between government forces and HTS-aligned factions.
