Bagwera tradition sparks TikTok curiosity
TikTok user @vlx._.f3fe has sparked intrigue with a video capturing a Bagwera outside a gate in Phalaborwa, Limpopo. The Bagwera, members of a traditional practice originating in Tzaneen, are individuals who attend initiation school twice before donning their distinct costumes. Known for performing in public to earn money, they also uphold strict cultural etiquette.
According to tradition, Bagwera must maintain a distance from their caretakers, known as Baditi, while walking, preserving the dignity of their role. This adherence to ancient customs often results in Bagwera chasing or reprimanding people they encounter on the streets.
