US: China calls for political settlement of Korean Peninsula issue
New York, United States - December 18, 2024 A Chinese envoy, at a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Korean Peninsula on Wednesday, reiterated China's stand to promote political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue, and rebutted distorted interpretation by the U.S. delegation of China's efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the region. Speaking at the meeting held in the U.N. headquarters, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, provided a four-point suggestion regarding the Korean Peninsula issue, stressing efforts to maintain stability and prevent war and chaos, create an enabling atmosphere for dialogue, seek fundamental solutions, and disdain cold-war mentality. Geng also pointed out that certain countries have been manipulating the Korean Peninsula situation with a cold war mentality and zero-sum game principles, and have been actively promoting its Indian-Pacific Strategy and regional military alliance. As a result, the security and interests of countries in the region are severely undermined. Geng demanded that related countries stop provoking confrontations between camps, and facilitate political settlement of the issue. In response to misinterpretation and smear by the U.S. delegation of China's role in the region, Geng condemned it as "totally unacceptable," and urged the U.S. to play an active role in solving the issue. This is totally unacceptable. China, as a responsible major country and a permanent member of the UNSC, always stands for peacefully solving disputes based on the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter. We have always been promoting political settlement of regional conflicts and tense situations. No matter regarding the Ukraine issue or the Korean Peninsula issue, China has been calling for peace and conversation, and we will continue to do so. We also expect that the U.S. will play a positive role in promoting settlement of the related issues."; FILE: U.N. Headquarters, New York City - Date Unknown 3. U.N. headquarters; FILE: U.N.
