Vanuatu: Vanuatu coordinating with local, int'l partners in aftermath of quake
Port Vila, Vanuatu - December 18, 2024 Vanuatu authorities have been mobilizing resources and coordinating with local authorities and international partners as rescue and relief operations continue in the aftermath of Tuesday's deadly magnitude-7.3 earthquake, a government worker said Thursday. In an interview with the China Global Television Network (CGTN) via video link from the capital Port Vila, John Regenvanu, who works at the Vanuatu Project Management Unit, gave an update on the latest situation and confirmed that at least 14 people, including two Chinese nationals, have tragically lost their lives, while over 200 individuals have sustained injuries. Following the quake, Regenvanu said the country's National Disaster Management Office has been coordinating efforts with local authorities and international partners, while the government has also declared a seven-day state of emergency and imposed a curfew in most affected areas to help facilitate rescue efforts. As emergency personnel race to find possible survivors who may be trapped beneath the rubble, Regenvanu also pointed to the ongoing difficulties hindering the ongoing rescue operation.
