US: LMPD Citing Woman for Unlawful Camping While in Labor
Louisville, United States - September 27, 2024 Body camera footage released Thursday shows a Louisville Metro Police officer citing a woman for unlawful camping while she was under an interstate overpass, in labor and waiting for an ambulance. The incident occurred on September 27, when Lt. Caleb Stewart approached the woman, who was sitting next to mattresses, visibly distressed and claiming she was in labor. Despite her plea for medical help, stating she was leaking amniotic fluid, Stewart issued a citation for street camping. As the woman continued to walk away to await EMS, Stewart detained her, insisting she was violating camping laws. In an emotional exchange, the woman repeatedly questioned why she was being detained, stating, "I gotta go to the hospital." Later, Stewart was heard expressing doubt about her condition, saying, "I don't believe for one second that this lady's gone into labor," but still called for EMS assistance. The woman, who was later confirmed to have given birth that same day, was issued a citation for unlawful camping. As she gathered her belongings and prepared to leave with EMS, she expressed frustration with the police, calling them "horrible people" for targeting the homeless.
