A joint operation by Laos and China captures 250 suspected call centre scammers. Myanmar has deported 31,000 to China
In joint raids led by China's Ministry of Public Security, 250 Chinese nationals in Laos have been arrested and extradited to China on suspicion of being employed in call center scams. Over 1,000 mobile phones and computers were seized. (Source: Laos Post 24 December 2024)
The locations of the call centres have not been disclosed, but Thai authorities have recently removed illegal internet cables crossing the Mekong River from the Golden Triangle area where gangs based in Laos were using Thailand's internet services to fraudulently scam victims in the special economic zone. New construction is ongoing and it resembles a small city, complete with region of billions of cash. Thai police said that the cables connected to the area where there are casinos operated by Kings Romans, a Hong Kong company which has a 99 year lease on the its own security force. The area is well known for its illegal activities, including narcotics smuggling.
MYANMAR has deported 31,000 telecom scammers to China since joint operations began in September 2023,according to the South China Morning Post.
