Beginning at noon on January 16, the Los Angeles Police began inventorying the infamous vehicles that residents fleeing the Palisades fire had abandoned at the bottleneck on Sunset drive, many leaving with their car keys in their pockets, as they raced to the sea to escape being consumed in the flames. The police are doing the almost impossible task of searching for VINs in the rubble of the burnt cars. Tow trucks are picking up both the ones still drivable and the burnt out shells and taking them to storage facilities, where owners can get them, free of charge, or have their insurance companies inspect them.
