Lisbon, Portugal - January 28, 2025 One in five families in Portugal is unable to adequately heat their homes in winter, putting the country at the top of the list in Europe in terms of energy poverty and causing preventable deaths every year. According to EuroMOMO, an observatory that monitors excess mortality in 27 European countries, Portugal is the only country to have recorded more deaths than normal every week since the beginning of this winter. Camera: CARLOS CASELLES FOOTAGE OF HEATERS. SOUNDBITES OF: -WALLY BARROS, NEIGHBOR: "We use a gas heater. I think it saves energy and keeps the house warm. We have two gas heaters and that's enough to keep the house and my room warm. That's fine, that's sensible. But when we turn them off, we get quite cold, both in summer and in winter. In winter it's worse, but in summer the house is cold too. -CHRISTINA, NEIGHBOR: "To be honest, I don't have a heating system. I was surprised because I come from France and in France it is normal for houses to have central heating. I have already seen that it is not the norm here in Portugal. In December it was very cold [in my house]. There were nights when I had to sleep with my coat on. It's a different experience... I already knew what it was like to be cold in the street, but to live in a house with the cold inside was a new experience". "I have [a radiator] but I don't usually use it because of its environmental impact, I don't think it's the best solution. Also because electricity is very expensive. This year, for example, I haven't used it yet". [Restrictions: Spain, Latin America, or the U.S. Hispanic market]
