US: Undercover Investigation Exposes Sick, Dying Puppies in Nevada Pet Stores
Las Vegas, United States - January 22, 2025 An undercover investigation has revealed shocking conditions at six Nevada pet stores, where sick and dying puppies were neglected, mistreated, and housed in unsafe environments. The findings have sparked outrage and a proposed state bill, Cindy Lou’s Law, named after a puppy who died after being denied veterinary care. The investigation, conducted by the Humane Society of the United States, found that stores—including Puppy Heaven, Petland Henderson, and four Puppies for Less locations—failed to provide medical care, sourced dogs from notorious puppy mills, and deceived customers about the health of their animals. Staff were caught on camera admitting that puppies frequently get sick and that stores refuse to cover vet bills. Some dogs were kept in dangerous enclosures, while others were subjected to makeshift medical treatments in backrooms. At Puppy Heaven, a lethargic Havanese puppy named Cindy Lou was kept in a bathroom pen, ignored despite worsening health. Only after the investigator reported her to authorities was she taken to a vet—too late to save her life. Meanwhile, her photo remained on the store’s social media, with staff falsely claiming she had been adopted. Other stores exposed in the investigation included Puppies for Less locations sourcing dogs from known puppy mills and housing them in squalid conditions. Employees admitted that returned sick puppies were often euthanized, and sick animals were kept in backrooms, sometimes untreated. At Petland Henderson, investigators documented cross-contamination risks, with used syringes soaking in sinks alongside kitchen utensils. Cindy Lou’s Law aims to end the sale of puppies in Nevada pet stores, cutting off the pipeline from large-scale breeding facilities and preventing further suffering. If passed, Nevada would join eight other states, including California and Oregon, in banning pet store puppy sales. Advocates say the law would push consumers toward ethical pet sources, such as shelters or responsible breeders. “The documented pipeline of puppy mill dogs to pet stores in Nevada is a nightmare for animals and consumers,” said Rebecca Goff, Nevada state director for the Humane Society. “Puppies like Cindy Lou never get the chance for a loving home. Our lawmakers must act to stop this cruelty.”
