Greenland - February 03, 2025 New research reveals that crevasses in the Greenland Ice Sheet are growing larger and deeper at an alarming rate, driven by climate change and the accelerating flow of glaciers. Using over 8,000 high-resolution 3D maps, scientists led by Durham University found that between 2016 and 2021, the size and depth of cracks increased significantly, particularly at the fast-flowing edges of the ice sheet. This rapid development of crevasses could accelerate the loss of ice from Greenland, contributing to rising sea levels. “This is the first time we’ve been able to see such rapid changes across the entire ice sheet,” said Dr. Tom Chudley, lead author of the study. As crevasses expand, they could speed up glacier movement and increase iceberg calving, creating a dangerous feedback loop. Greenland’s ice sheet has already contributed to 14mm of global sea level rise since 1992, and the latest research suggests it could add up to 30cm by 2100. With enough ice to raise sea levels by 7 meters if it were to fully melt, Greenland’s future is a growing concern for global climate stability.
