SOUNDBITE (Arabic): NAWAF SALAM, Lebanese Prime Minister
"(01:06-01:48) Now that we have announced the new government, which I hope will be the government of reform and salvation. I wish to stress the following points that I consider are top priorities: first, the reforms are the only way to a true salvation, and the government will be charged to assure security and stability in Lebanon by implementing the UN Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreement and the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation from every inch of the Lebanese territories, and simultaneously with the reconstruction that I previously said it is not just a promise but a commitment.
(01:48-02:16) This government will seek to restore the trust between the citizens and the state, between Lebanon and its Arab surroundings, and between Lebanon and the International community. The government will have to work with the Parliament Council to complete the implementation of the Taif Agreement and proceed with financial and economic reforms. The cabinet will be a space for constructive joint work and not for quarrels."
In early January, Aoun, Lebanon's former army chief, was elected the country's 14th president, ending a two-year presidential vacuum that had paralyzed the country's political system.
A few days later, Salam, president of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, was named Lebanon's new prime minister and tasked with forming a new government.
