STORYLINE:

South Korea's court held the first preparatory hearing of impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol's criminal trial on Thursday.

Yoon presented himself at about 10:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) in a courtroom of the Seoul Central District Court. The impeached leader is facing charges of insurrection.

The main evidence and points of contention were clarified during the preparatory hearing, which does not necessarily require the defendant's attendance. The second hearing is scheduled for March 24.

The court now begins a review of the request by Yoon to cancel his arrest and release him from custody.

Yoon was apprehended in the presidential office on Jan. 15 and indicted under detention on Jan. 26 as a suspected insurrection ringleader.

Yoon declared martial law on the night of Dec. 3, 2024, but the opposition-led National Assembly repealed this emergency measure just hours later.

The motion to impeach Yoon was passed through the National Assembly on Dec. 14, 2024, before being delivered to the constitutional court for up to 180 days of deliberation. During this time, Yoon is suspended from his duties as president.
