Tens of thousands of people took part in a massive tug-of-war in China.

The competition, which involved a 5,931ft (1,808m) rope, took place on February 11 in Lintan County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, as part of the annual Lantern Festival.

It is said to date back 600 years and draws a vast number of participants each year.

Footage shows a line of competitors pulling the 16-tonne rope on the largest street in the county.

The Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the Chinese calendar, during the full moon.
