Chaos as record-breaking snowstorm leaves roads paralysed in east China
On 2 March, Jinan, Shandong Province, was struck by an exceptionally rare and severe snowstorm, bringing the city's transport system to a standstill and severely impacting residents' daily travel.
The city experienced an unprecedented heavy snowfall for this time of year, with snow accumulation exceeding 15 cm in many urban areas and surpassing 20 cm in some regions. This set a new record for March snowfall in Jinan’s meteorological history.
The blizzard, accompanied by strong winds and a sharp temperature drop, posed significant challenges to the city's transportation. Major roads were heavily covered in snow and ice, leaving vehicles stranded and traffic paralyzed. Several motorway toll stations were forced to close due to unsafe conditions, causing large-scale traffic congestion. Public transport was also severely disrupted, with multiple bus routes temporarily suspended or adjusted, and metro services facing significant delays, making travel difficult for residents.
Many commuters were left stranded, unable to reach work or return home on time. Schools were closed due to the extreme weather, switching to online learning. The heavy snowfall also posed considerable risks to urban infrastructure and power supply systems.
In response, Jinan’s meteorological authorities issued red alerts for both icy roads and heavy snowfall, advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Meanwhile, emergency services set up temporary warming stations along key routes, providing stranded citizens with hot drinks, food, and essential supplies.
