Senior Hamas official Taher al-Nono confirmed on Sunday that several meetings were held between Hamas leadership and U.S. presidential envoy for hostage in Doha, Qatar, on the release of an Israeli-American hostage and ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip. The White House last week confirmed that Adam Boehler, U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy for hostage affairs, had been engaged in talks with Hamas representatives in Doha over the past few weeks. This marks the first direct negotiations between the U.S. and Hamas since the group was designated a terrorist organization by the United States in 1997. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office stated that the U.S. had consulted Israel before th direct talks with Hamas and that Israel had conveyed its position to the U.S. side. However, the meetings have reportedly caused tension between the U.S. and Israel. The Times of Israel reported on Friday that Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer "lashed out" during a Tuesday phone call at Boehler over the matter. Meanwhile, Egypt has been intensifying diplomatic efforts to achieve a Gaza ceasefire and advance the strip's reconstruction. On Tuesday, Egypt hosted an emergency Arab summit and proposed a Gaza non-displacement reconstruction plan valued at 53 billion U.S. dollars. According to Taher al-Nono, a Hamas delegation, led by Mohammad Darwish, head of the movement's leadership council, had arrived in Cairo and talks will be held regarding the outcomes of a recent Arab summit and ways to implement them. A three-phase Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, took effect on January 19. The negotiations for the second phase of the deal remain stalled after the initial 42-day phase expired on March 1. Shotlist: Gaza Strip - Recent: FILE: Doha, Qatar - Date Unknown 1.
