İstanbul, Türkiye - April 23, 2025 On April 23, X user Qusay Noor posted a video showing a huge number of people running out from buildings to the streets of Istanbul after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit the city. They said: "An earthquake shook Istanbul a short while ago." The earthquake struck off the coast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara, near Silivri, around 70 kilometers west of the city. Aftershocks are continuing, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD). Authorities reported no loss of life but said 151 people were injured, many from jumping from heights out of panic. No residential buildings were damaged, though one abandoned building collapsed in the central Fatih District. Turkey’s interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, stated that the quake lasted 13 seconds at a depth of seven kilometers. Fifty-one aftershocks have been recorded so far, with the largest reaching a magnitude of 5.9. Yerlikaya urged citizens to stay alert for possible aftershocks.
