GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - APRIL 24, 2025: Palestinian doctor Ahmed Najjar faced a harrowing moment on Thursday when he discovered the bodies of his parents among those brought to Nasser Hospital following an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza. Najjar and his colleagues had been responding to casualties after a residential building in Khan Yunis was hit. During the emergency, he received a call informing him that the targeted building was, in fact, his own family home. As ambulances arrived with the injured and deceased, Najjar was struck with the heartbreaking realization that two of the bodies were his own parents. Overcome with grief, he was comforted by fellow hospital staff as he grappled with the immense loss. Healthcare workers in Gaza continue to carry out their duties under extreme conditions, frequently enduring immense personal hardship. Many, like Najjar, are caring for the wounded while mourning their own families, as Israel’s bombardment of the besieged enclave continues unabated. Israel resumed its deadly offensive on the Gaza Strip on March 18, abandoning a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January. It has killed nearly 51,400 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in the enclave since October 2023. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
