Türkiye: Police attacked the May 1 Labor Day march
Türkiye - May 01, 2025 Approximately 400 people who wanted to celebrate May 1 in Taksim Square in Istanbul were detained. The Istanbul Governor's Office did not allow celebrations in Taksim Square, Istanbul's symbolic venue for May 1st celebrations. The police, who closed Taksim Square and all roads leading to Taksim, did not allow marches. Despite the governor's bans, many union members and university students wanted to march from Şişli to Taksim. The police beat the protesters and detained them. The Istanbul Governor's Office announced that 384 people were detained. The Istanbul Governor's Office has not permitted May 1 celebrations in Taksim since 2013. A total of 34 people lost their lives as a result of the attack by counter-guerrilla forces on May 1, 1977. Since that year, Taksim Square has become the symbol of May 1 celebrations in Istanbul.
