Medical services in Gaza face a severe shortage of resources due to Israel’s blockade and ongoing genocidal war. Last weekend, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned that its medical services “are critically under-resourced” amid continued siege and ongoing bombardment. In the midst of a massive humanitarian crisis, 12-year-old Rahaf Iyyad, living in northern Gaza, began to experience rapid changes in her body due to the unidentified disease she contracted. The little girl's unknown illness, contracted during the Israeli attacks, quickly worsened and left no trace of her pre-war beauty. Due to malnutrition and illness, Rahaf's bones have weakened and her hair has fallen out, and she can no longer walk without the support of her parents. In a video published on social media, Rahaf called for help, saying: "I want to be like I used to be, let my hair grow long so I can comb it, and pray standing." Rahaf, who has been to the Al-Rantisi Hospital for Children in western Gaza for treatment many times, dreams of returning to her good days, but her illness cannot be diagnosed due to the collapse of the health system in Gaza. Doctors say that even if her illness is diagnosed, there will be no treatment in Gaza, where hunger and medical shortages are prevalent. Over 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, many multiple times, living in overcrowded shelters or exposed to the elements, fueling the spread of diseases and epidemics. Last week, the director of Gaza’s government media office, Ismail Thawabteh , told Anadolu that the enclave had entered “an advanced stage of famine” due to the continued closure of border crossings and Israel’s renewed military onslaught. More than 52,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in a brutal Israeli onslaught since October 2023, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
