Suffering from severe weight loss, enlarged internal organs, and other undiagnosed health complications, Maryam’s condition is rapidly deteriorating due to the lack of proper diagnostic tools and treatment options in Gaza. Doctors at Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis are doing everything they can to keep her alive. Weighing only 4 kilograms, Maryam requires specialized medical care that is currently unavailable in the besieged enclave. Her parents Muna al-Aydi and Abdullah Abu Dakka, have issued an urgent appeal for permission to transfer their daughter abroad for treatment, as Gaza’s fragile healthcare system struggles under the weight of Israel’s blockade and continuous bombardment. As Israel’s ongoing attacks and closure of border crossings continue to disrupt the flow of medicine and medical equipment into the Gaza Strip, patients in need of urgent care are facing life-threatening challenges. Since March 2, Israel has kept all border crossings shut, cutting off the entry of food, medicine, fuel, and other essential supplies for Gaza’s 2.4 million residents. Israel, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,900 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million inhabitants. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave. Reporting by Doaa Albaz // Writing by Mustafa Tuncer
