Vienna, Austria - May 14, 2025 The atmosphere was filled with joy this morning as Schönbrunn Zoo held a welcome ceremony for its new giant panda couple. The pandas, female Lan Yun and male He Feng, arrived from China on April 23, 2025. After completing quarantine, they were introduced to the public today in their beautifully redesigned enclosure. The partnership between Schönbrunn Zoo and the China Wildlife Conservation Association has lasted since 2003. It was recently extended for another ten years, continuing efforts in panda conservation and research. At the event, Federal President Dr. Alexander Van der Bellen praised the animals as symbols of the friendship between Austria and China. He expressed hope that cooperation like this will continue to bring nations together. Federal Chancellor Dr. Christian Stocker emphasized the value of the project for both science and diplomacy. He called it a powerful example of how species protection can unite people and promote understanding. Chinese Ambassador Qi Mei celebrated the success of past efforts in panda conservation. She welcomed Lan Yun and He Feng as cultural ambassadors, bringing greetings from the Chinese people. The panda enclosure underwent major renovations before the pair’s arrival. The indoor space was expanded, and new climbing structures and water features were added to the outdoor area. Zoo Director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck and his team worked closely with their Chinese counterparts to ensure the pandas' smooth transition. Lan Yun and He Feng were born in 2020 and are now settling into their new home. The reopening included a lion dance performance to mark the occasion and bring good luck. Visitors can now watch the pandas explore their habitat, making it a special day for animal lovers of all ages.
