HALHUL DEPUTY MAYOR KHALIL AL-SHITRIT SPEAKING TO CAMERA (Arabic)HALHUL, PALESTINE - MAY 26, 2025: Israeli settlers began unauthorized settlement activity on Nabi Yunus Hill in the town of Halhul, located in the occupied West Bank, on Monday, May 26, according to local Palestinian officials. Halhul Deputy Mayor Khalil al-Shitrit told Anadolu that a group of settlers pitched tents at the top of the hill and brought equipment to the site, effectively taking control of the area. “The land area is very large — it’s estimated to be in the hundreds of dunums. This poses a serious threat to farmers and landowners because it limits their ability to access their land,” he said. Al-Shitrit emphasized that the settlers’ actions were carried out without local consent and through force, noting that the outpost was established at the highest point in the West Bank. He accused Israel of attempting to annex Palestinian territory in violation of international law through such activities. Since the start of the Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, 2023, nearly 970 Palestinians have been killed and more than 7,000 injured in attacks by the Israeli army and illegal settlers across the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The International Court of Justice declared last July that Israel’s longstanding occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal, and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
