Mono City, United States - May 25, 2025 A fast-moving wildfire has exploded across Mono County, forcing evacuations and shutting down a critical Sierra Nevada highway just ahead of Memorial Day weekend. The blaze, known as the Inn Fire, ignited Thursday afternoon on the west side of Highway 395, just south of Mono City. By 8 p.m. Friday, it had scorched at least 707 acres, according to the Inyo National Forest Service. Officials have closed Highway 395 from Lee Vining to State Route 167. The fire has downed and burned power lines, creating major hazards for both emergency crews and the public. The Mono County Sheriff's Office quickly issued evacuation orders from Tioga Lodge to Mono Inn, north of Lee Vining. Residents were directed to evacuation centers at Bridgeport Memorial Hall and the Lee Vining Community Center. The closure of Highway 395 is a serious disruption, particularly for travelers headed into the Sierra for the holiday weekend. As of Friday evening, there was zero containment. Fire crews continue battling the flames as the cause remains under investigation.
