STRUCTURES AND BUILDINGS SURROUNDING TIGRIS RIVERBAGHDAD, IRAQ - JUNE 5: Toxic pollution in the Tigris River has been posing a growing threat to public health in Iraq, as untreated waste from state institutions, hospitals, and electricity stations flows directly into the waterway. In the capital Baghdad, a city of nearly 9 million people, the Tigris River is being heavily contaminated by chemical waste, sewage, and household garbage. Local residents report strong foul odors spreading through the surrounding neighborhoods, further impacting air quality. Health officials say the river’s pollution has been contributing to a rise in serious diseases, including skin infections and colon cancer. In particular, toxic liquids from Baghdad’s hospitals are discharged into the river through underground pipelines, worsening the crisis. Despite growing concerns, locals continue to dump domestic waste directly into the river, intensifying the environmental and health hazards in Iraq’s capital.
