Stonehaven, United Kingdom - June 03, 2025 Stonehaven RNLI launched their lifeboat Tuesday evening after four paddleboarders drifted out to sea in strong winds off Catterline Harbour. The volunteer crew was tasked by HM Coastguard at 8:15 p.m. and quickly made their way to the last reported location. They found the first paddleboarder before locating the remaining three who had drifted farther out. All four were safely brought aboard the lifeboat and given initial casualty care. The rescued paddleboarders were taken back to Catterline Harbour. There they were handed over to HM Coastguard and the Scottish Ambulance Service. Montrose RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat also responded to support the rescue but was stood down after Stonehaven RNLI retrieved the casualties. Montrose RNLI then located a missing paddleboard to avoid further emergencies. Kenny Jones, volunteer helm at Stonehaven RNLI, stressed the importance of safety. He said the paddleboarders were fortunate to have mobile phones and knew to call for help. Jones warned that weather conditions can change rapidly and stressed the need for proper equipment like life jackets, radios, and bright clothing. He also highlighted the importance of understanding tides, weather, and local conditions before heading out. Jones urged anyone witnessing someone in trouble on the coast to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
