Austin, United States - June 09, 2025 [WARNING: video contains profanity] Brandon Farmahini published a video showing police action against anti-ICE protesters in Austin on June 8. He said officers deployed tear gas downtown. Hundreds gathered to protest ICE detentions nationwide. The demonstration, organized by the Austin branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, began at the state Capitol around 7 p.m. The crowd marched toward the J. J. “Jake” Pickle Federal Building, chanting and denouncing immigration raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While organizers ended the protest after 8 p.m., over a hundred protesters continued. Police ordered them off the streets. Some returned to the federal building but were blocked by officers. Law enforcement then fired tear gas into the crowd, forcing it to disperse. Speakers condemned ICE for detaining people without due process. Valerie Cruz, an Austin resident and first-generation American, said she marched to support undocumented immigrants. “Not everyone has that privilege, and that’s why I’m here,” she said. Similar protests occurred in Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston after ICE sweeps in Los Angeles sparked nationwide outrage. In Los Angeles, 700 Marines were deployed, joining 2,000 National Guard troops already sent by the Trump administration. California Governor Gavin Newsom called it “an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism” and announced legal action. Austin police and Texas DPS officers followed protesters closely. One DPS officer fell from a motorcycle. Moments later, another officer pepper-sprayed a protester not involved in the incident. At least two people were reportedly detained, but authorities have not confirmed any arrests or injuries.
