Kenya: Protests continue in Kenya over X influencer's death in police custody
NAIROBI, KENYA - JUNE 17, 2025: Demonstrators took to the streets of Nairobi on Tuesday, June 17, demanding justice for Albert Ojwang a blogger, X influencer, and teacher, who died in police custody after being arrested earlier this month. Protesters accuse the authorities of abuse and are demanding accountability for what they say is a pattern of police misconduct and extrajudicial killings. The unrest has increased pressure on the Kenyan government to investigate the incident and address widespread concerns about police brutality. Kenya’s Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Eliud Kipkoech Lagat, announced on Monday that he would step down while the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) carries out its investigation. Ojwang, 31, who had recently posted online criticism of Lagat, was detained in Homa Bay and then transported to Nairobi, where he died in police custody. A postmortem examination found injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma and strangulation. Lagat’s name has been central to the inquiry, as Ojwang’s arrest reportedly followed a defamation complaint filed by the senior officer. Critics and civil society groups argue that Lagat’s continued presence in office would have undermined the credibility of the investigation. Kenyan President William Ruto condemned Ojwang’s death, calling it “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” and demanded a swift and credible probe. Reporting by Andrew Wasike / Writing by Aleyna Cil
