This is the dramatic moment fishermen rush to save their tackle from waves crashing on the beach as Hurricane Erick nears Mexico.

Footage captures anglers rescuing their fishing equipment being swept away by the raging waters in Puerto Escondido on June 18.

Erick intensified into a Category 3 major hurricane on Wednesday evening, threatening the southern coast of Mexico with destructive winds and heavy rainfall. It is expected to make landfall early Thursday.

The US Hurricane Center reported that Erick's maximum sustained winds reached 120 mph after several hours of rapid strengthening, escalating from a Category 1 storm earlier that day.

The storm's projected path is expected to bring its centre close to the resort city of Acapulco, which suffered severe damage from Hurricane Otis in October 2023.
